Mount Isa preparing for recycling rollout
Yellow-lidded bins will start appearing at households from this week.
Yellow bins will start rolling out to Mount Isa homes this week as the city gears up for the start of its recycling program.
It’ll be a big adjustment for a lot of households as rubbish collection transforms from four pick-ups per fortnight to just three.
However, Carly Grubb, Mount Isa City Council’s education officer for the recycling program, says that she’s confident families will be able to make the adjustment.
“People have been really positive for the most part,” she said.
“There’s a lot of people in our town who have lived elsewhere and they’ve had that experience with recycling and the people who’ve done it before love it and they’re feeling a sense of relief that they’re going to actually get to do that here.
“People here who have never experienced it before are a little bit concerned about the change.
“But that’s kind of how it rolls any time you do something a bit different.
“There is a period of adjustment and it will become easier in time.
“That’s what we’re here for – to support the transition – and answer people’s questions, but with a community effort I think it’s going to work out fine.”
Ms Grubb said yellow-lid bins would start to be dropped off at properties in Mount Isa from this week and that all residents should have a new recycling bin by early December.
“The biggest question that a lot of people seem to be asking is, ‘when’s my bin day going to be?’ and there’s actually a section on the (council) website that says what the bin days will be for each address and people can look that up,” she said.
“But if you’re having any trouble or you haven’t got the means to do that, just pop down to Kmart Plaza and see me on a Friday or Saturday around lunchtime or my colleague Sheree on a Thursday and we can look it up for you.
“We’re also asking people to look out for their neighbours who may not be able to do it for themselves, so if you can help make sure they know what’s going on that would be great.”
The first recycling pick-ups will be on the week of December 9.
“This isn’t something that our town’s trying out; it’s something that works all over Australia,” Ms Grubb said.
