There was a small but mighty gathering of Mount Isa Christians who took part in a peace walk across the city on Sunday afternoon, marking the beginning of Easter Holy Week.

A small congregation gathered on Sunday to march for peace as Easter Holy Week commemorations began across the region.

The peace walk, which started at Mount Isa Village and concluded on the lawns of the Civic Centre, has been hosted for more than 25 years in the city.

Good Shepherd Catholic Parish priest Father Mick Lowcock said the peace walk was held on Palm Sunday each year in remembrance of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

“We want to be like the people who welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem and not like the people who turned their back a few days later. We want to be people who try to bring peace in all things we do,” he said.

Father Mick said with war, natural disasters and economic troubles across the globe, the Easter period was a time to focus on what can unite the community.

“I think people are looking for something deeper and are travelling on an inward journey. It is a time to remember the cross and the resurrection,” he said.
